PAIN - CHAPTER 05: POLARIS

 Not a dream

It was now the turn of Lorna Dale, aka Polaris, a young mutant, daughter of Magneto, the historical enemy of the X-Men.

Lorna was sleeping (after all it was the middle of the night) and was dreaming. She was in a dark room with indefinite walls, browsing through a book sitting on a 40s-style wooden chair. The contents of the book were difficult to decipher, also because it didn't seem written in the Latin alphabet. Lorna was convinced it was a cookbook, a subject for which she had little interest. Her distracted reading was interrupted by a sinister figure who entered the room slamming the door. Lorna got up from her chair and followed him outside, without wondering too much why. She realized that she was no longer wearing her nightgown, but her superheroine costume: a tight green jumpsuit that left her belly uncovered. Oddly she was barefoot and not wearing her usual boots. Shee walked for a long time, without paying attention to the surrounding landscape, until she lost sight of that strange character with humanoid features but certainly not human. She looked around, she was surrounded by dozens and dozens of trees that made up a boundless and dense forest. Polaris was enjoying that unusual contact with such wild nature. But the pleasure soon turned into suffering.

Her body was suddenly crossed by a very violent electric current. The mystical android was hitting her from behind with powerful lightning bolts. Polaris was paralyzed and in excruciating pain. She realized that was not a dream. That pain was unbearably real. Parallel-X was actually enjoying the scene he had created. The girl's screams were music to his ears. It was a surprise. By now he even preferred them to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, who apparently were famous throughout the universe. It was time to increase the intensity of the torture, Parallel-X thought, but everything disappeared. Parallel-X had been ousted from the world he had created himself. He had run out of energy. "Damn!", he yelled.

Lorna woke up in her bed. She was hurting all over and crying. It had undoubtedly been the traumatic experience of her life, yet she was unaware that in a way it was a miracle it had been so short.
